Cutting out 18″ Girl Doll Apron with Maggie

Grandma Peggy and Maggie picked out a pretty pink-red gingham cloth. “It will make a pretty apron. And gingham washes easily! And probably this gingham won’t need ironing!”

“What’s ironing, Grandma Peggy?” asked Maggie. (Her parents always put wrinkled shirts or dresses back into the dryer till they looked nice.)

“Let’s go to my fun workroom” Grandma showed Maggie the iron and her pull-down ironing board.

“Can I iron?” asked Maggie.

“Yes, but ONLY if I am with you and give you permission.” Grandma said. She put the iron back but on a high shelf. She still had a small scar from an iron burn she got as a child. “Now let’s cut out the cloth and look at the pattern!”.

Grandma also selected a pink-red bias piece and some cotton lace. “This Butterick pattern is very nice. But I like to change patterns sometimes.

“I can’t wait to sew the apron. I want to show Mommy. Can we start now?” said Maggie

Grandma Peggy and Maggie Make Aprons!

Maggie loves the new doll Grandma Peggy gave her.  Last night, she and Daddy moved in with her mom’s parents Grandpa Peggy and Grandpa Erik.

Grandma Peggy held out the new doll Sallie and Maggie introduced Sallie to her doll Cheryl. Then, Maggie ate a snack, talked to her Mommy on the computer,  and fell asleep on the living room couch.  Dad fell asleep in the living room armchair nearby.

Today, Maggie is a bit scared…again. The house is pretty, but it is new to her. She hugs her doll Cheryl. And the new doll Sallie…that Grandma gave her last night.

Grandpa Erik and Daddy are working on the front first floor office. Daddy and Mom will work there soon.

Maggie sat on the outside front steps. She missed her friends. She held both her Cheryl and Sallie dolls close.  Grandma came out and said “Let’s do something your mom and I did. Let’s make aprons!”

Maggie had never worked a sewing machine. She is excited. “Can we make aprons for both dolls?”

Grandma pulls out two sewing patterns. ”  YES! We will use these patterns to make aprons!”.

So they go to Grandma’s cloth closet which was in her craft and painting room on the first floor.  “Pick out cloth you like. It should not be shiny or too thin. We will make the aprons out of good cotton.”

Next time—follow along as we review two Butterick apron patterns and show how to adjust the adult pattern…in order to make a child’s apron. 

“Let’s make aprons!” Grandma says. “Let’s look at our cloth now!”

Maggie grabs Cheryl and Sallie and follows Grandma to the Cloth Closet!.

“There’s a lot of different cloth here Grandma!” Maggie says. She starts opening up pieces of cloth to see which pattern she likes…

Next time: Grandma Peggy and Maggie will pick fabric, cut out aprons, and sew them.
